Castagna Trail
Primo percorso in E-Bike della nostra carriera di "scrittori"! Luca dispone di una Haibike fullseven 5.0 con motore Yamaha PW-ST, batteria integrata da 500 Wh, mentre la Vale, essendo in possesso di ferraglia lasciata in eredità da Napoleone, deve noleggiarsela.

Il punto di partenza più comodo per noi è il Residence Colibrì di Luca, che ha recentemente installato presso il parcheggio della struttura una zona dedicata alla ricarica delle bici, con apposita rastrelliera e un pannello con QR Code che fornisce spunti e informazioni sugli itinerari possibili in zona.
Ci addentriamo dopo pochi metri percorsi sulla via Aurelia, in via Sant'Isidoro e poi in Via Delle Vignasse, passando per Monte Carmelo e uscendo in Borgo Castello. Da qui iniziamo a salire verso l'entroterra per circa 5 km di asfalto.
Oltrepassiamo la Borgata Chiesa di Verzi, in prossimità di una curva a gomito, seguiamo l'indicazione per il "Rifugio", lasciandoci alle spalle la parrocchiale.
Si prosegue attraversando località Castagnabanca dove incontriamo un curioso spazio adibito a museo delle tradizioni e degli attrezzi contadini, rurali e montani: "Cascina il Baffo", dimora solitaria situata nel bel mezzo del bosco, tra castagni e sorgenti.
Da qui raggiungere il parcheggio della Castagna è un attimo. Tiriamo un pochino il fiato e iniziamo la nostra avventura in discesa.
Questo è il primo vero e proprio trail che effettuiamo per intero, pertanto siamo molto diffidenti e usiamo spesso i freni. (so che non si fa...ma le nostre indicazioni almeno sono sicuramente più precise :-p )
Il primo impatto è sicuramente molto positivo, trattasi di un percorso divertente e veloce, molto ben tenuto e lavorato ad hoc dai trail builders locali.
Ci sono passaggi tra alberi e sottobosco davvero emozionanti, spettacolari a dir poco. In un quarto d'ora almeno di discesa però, lo scenario cambia in modo drastico; la pendenza aumenta e il morbido terreno di fogliame lascia il posto alle rocce e ad alcuni passaggi impegnativi dove, non ci vergogniamo a dirlo, scendiamo dalla sella e portiamo la bici a mano.
Chiamato anche Rock Garden, questo tratto per noi risulta un po'impegnativo e visto che teniamo alla pelle (e Vale alla bici, che non è la sua), lo lasciamo percorrere a chi è più esperto di noi.
Farselo spingendo l'E-bike è un impegno mica da ridere eh! altro che divertimento!
Superato il segmento roccioso ci immettiamo per un breve tratto su strada bianca dove, verso la fine, il sentiero confluisce nella parte finale dell'iconico Karma Trail (indicazioni sulla sinistra).
Questo tratto si sviluppa per circa 4,5 km molto variegati, pendenze alternate a pianori lasciano spazio a rampe ricavate ad hoc per provare l'ebbrezza dei salti.In prossimità di un piccolo ponte incontriamo il waypoint della Grotta di Ulisse, mai sentita nominare sino ad allora. Ci incanta con le sue piccole cascatelle ed alcuni pozze di acqua trasparente. Posiamo le bici e immergiamo i piedi scalzi nell'acqua (che piacevole sensazione, una sferzata di energia!) Vale vuole vedere da vicino l'antro della grotta, un consiglio spassionato, fatelo anche voi!
Usciamo dal bosco imboccando un sentiero che già conosciamo perchè attraversato durante una delle nostre classiche trekkinate.
Ci inoltriamo in discesa per Borgata Isola Superiore prima e Inferiore poi, passando per Santa Libera, ultima altura a disposizione dove poter rimirare Loano dall'alto con vista a 180° sulla Marina e sul Borgo, tra tutti gli edifici svetta il cupolone di San Giovanni Battista.
Scendiamo ancora verso il mare e passiamo per una lunga via stretta tra le mura liguri, oltrepassiamo le Borgate dei Meceti e dei Mazzocchi, ricongiungendoci infine sulla via Aurelia.
Da qui c'è la possibilità di scegliere se tornare al campo base o di allungare fino alla passeggiata dove di recente sono state installate un paio di colonnine di ricarica per E-bike.

The most convenient starting point for us is the Colibrì di Luca Residence, which has recently installed an area dedicated to recharging bikes at the parking lot, with a special rack and a QR Code panel that provides ideas and information on possible itineraries in area.
We enter after a few meters along the Via Aurelia, in Via Sant'Isidoro and then in Via Delle Vignasse, passing through Monte Carmelo and exiting at Borgo Castello. From here we begin to climb towards the hinterland for about 5 km of asphalt.
We pass the Borgata Chiesa di Verzi, near a sharp bend, follow the signs for the "Refuge", leaving the parish church behind us. We continue through Castagnabanca where we meet a curious space used as a museum of traditions and peasant, rural and mountain tools: "Cascina il Baffo", a solitary dwelling located in the middle of the wood, between chestnut trees and springs.
From here, reaching the Castagna car park is an instant. Let's take a breather and begin our downhill adventure.
This is the first real trail we do in full, so we are very suspicious and use the brakes often. (I know it's not done ... but at least our indications are certainly more precise :-p)
The first impact is certainly very positive, it is a fun and fast route, very well maintained and worked ad hoc by local trail builders.
There are passages between trees and undergrowth that are really exciting, spectacular to say the least. In at least a quarter of an hour of descent, however, the scenario changes drastically; the slope increases and the soft ground of foliage gives way to rocks and some challenging passages where, we are not ashamed to say it, we get off the saddle and carry the bike by hand.
Also called Rock Garden, this stretch for us is a bit demanding and since we care about the skin (and Vale to the bike, which is not his), we leave it to those who are more experienced than us. Getting it by pushing the E-bike is not a laugh, eh! nothing but fun!
After the rocky segment we take a short stretch on a dirt road where, towards the end, the path joins the final part of the iconic Karma Trail (signs on the left).
This stretch extends for about 4.5 km very varied, alternating slopes with plateaus give way to ramps created ad hoc to experience the thrill of jumps.Near a small bridge we meet the waypoint of the Grotta di Ulisse, never heard of until to then. It enchants us with its small waterfalls and some pools of transparent water. We put down the bikes and immerse our bare feet in the water (what a pleasant feeling, a burst of energy!) Vale wants to see the cave of the cave up close, a dispassionate advice, do it too!
We leave the woods taking a path that we already know because we crossed it during one of our classic trekkinate.
We go downhill to Borgata Isola Superiore first and then Inferiore, passing through Santa Libera, the last hill available where you can admire Loano from above with a 180 ° view of the Marina and the Borgo, among all the buildings stands the dome of San Giovanni Baptist.
We go down further towards the sea and pass through a long narrow street between the Ligurian walls, we pass the villages of Meceti and Mazzocchi, finally rejoining the Via Aurelia.
From here there is the possibility to choose whether to return to the base camp or to extend up to the promenade where a couple of charging columns for E-bikes have recently been installed.
